Ray has been working as an artist since he graduated from college with a B.S. in visual communications. In 2003 Ray moved from Baltimore, MD, where he worked mostly as an illustrator and graphic designer, to Southern CA where he began combining his love of nature, wildlife and the outdoors with his artistic sensibilities and experience. Ray's medium is graphite/pencil. He uses pencils because "at the core of all good representational art is quality drawing. When the drawing becomes the finished piece, one is able to see right to the core of that image. Using only skillful drawing, value, composition and the illusion of texture to create an image unassisted by color but still managing to convey a sense of place or evoke a certain emotion is a difficult challenge to overcome." Creating a successful image is a hard won and rewarding experience for Ray.
