Betsey Carter
Betsey Carter is a utilitarian potter in Charleston, South Carolina, and is a partner in Cone 10 Studios (formerly Charleston ClayWorks).
Betsey was raised in Charleston, South Carolina. She received her BA at Agnes Scott College (GA), where she studied ceramics. She has also studied at the Gibbes Museum School (SC), and the Arrowmont School of Crafts (TN).
Betsey works primarily in porcelain, fired to cone 10 in reduction, creating functional but decorative pieces. In her work she explores and exploits the strength, fluidity, and whiteness of the porcelain, striving for clean lines and simplicity of form. Her work expresses a contemporary ethos in a traditional art form, while heeding the philosophy of William Morris, of the British Arts and Crafts movement, that the objects surrounding us should be useful and beautiful.
When she is not making pots, Betsey is Associate Professor of Library Science and Head of Reference and Instruction at The Citadel in Charleston.
