A member of Oil Painters of America and multiple award winner in the Charleston area, Jan has displayed professionally since 2004. Her choices as an artist are keenly influenced by her relationship with nature. Like Rachael Carson, Jan views nature as a “source of strength” and renewal. She is disturbed by environmental destruction and modern trends that alienate humans from the earth that sustains them. When painting, she strives to share the beauty and value she finds in the natural world around her.
A resident of Charleston since 1989, Jan is fascinated by the rich birdlife and habitats of the lowcountry. Her strikingly realistic “nature portraits” are built slowly and deliberately over a period of weeks in thin blended layers and glazes of oil. . She insists on placing creatures in their natural habitat, often capturing them in interaction with their environment. Sometimes she finds the “beauty is in the details.” Then she focuses sharply, using tight strokes to develop photoreal images of butterfly wings, flowers, feathers, or shadow patterns. In other scenes, she chooses to relax the focus and detail to emphasize the color, light, texture, or rhythm in a scene. Jan’s work may be found in businesses and private collections throughout the US and Canada.
