Kids for Conservation

Southeastern Wildlife Exposition’s 2010 Kids for Conservation program was a great success! The quality of the submissions was overwhelming and we were thrilled by the excellent response to the addition of our new photography and poetry competitions. With over 100 posters, poems and photographs, the KFC Tent in Marion Square displayed some of the best artistic talent in the Tri-County area, while the Main Branch of the Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) hosted 42 incredibly creative birdhouses.

As we prepare for the 2011 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, we are excited to expand and improve the Kids for Conservation program. Through the partnership with the CCPL, SEWE artists will hold lectures for students at its Main Branch during the week of the Expo. In addition, KFC winners will be invited to participate in an educational workshop hosted by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources on Mary’s Island the week following the Expo. This one-day workshop, also offered to winners from the SC Junior Duck Stamp Program, will be conducted by SEWE artists.

The goal of SEWE’s Kids for Conservation program is to promote wildlife and environmental conservation awareness in our young citizens. Sponsored by SCANA, the KFC competition is open to all Tri-County students (public, private and home schooled) in grades 1–12.  The Poster Competition is open to 1st through 5th grades, the Poetry Competition & Photography Competition is open to 6th through 8th grades, and the Birdhouse Competition and Conservation Project Competition is open to 9th through 12th grades.

If you participated last year, we thank you for your support.  If not, we hope you will consider doing so this year, and encourage your students to share their creative “wild sides.” Guidelines and forms will be dispersed at the beginning of the 2010–2011 school year and also available on our website, www.sewe.com. For more information on Kids for Conservation, contact Natalie Wooten at 843-723-1748 or e-mail nwooten@sewe.com.
