About Sam
Working primarily in transparent watercolor, the Texas native seeks to capture the atmosphere of the moment, as well as the color and drama inherent in his outdoor subjects. Many of his images feature young hunters and fishers. “Wildlife is primary in my work,” he says, but notes that, “people are important elements of wildlife." Caldwell was named Texas State Artist for 2004 and Texas Ducks Unlimited Artist for 2007 and again for 2011. His advocacy for coastal conservation as an artist, spokesman, writer and CCA Currents Editor gained Caldwell recognition as the CCA Dallas Conservationist for 2015 and a place on the Texas Maritime Wall of Fame in 2016. He has just been named the Harvey Weil Lifetime Legacy Honoree for 2023.
