The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition Announces Acclaimed Charcoal Artist Ray Brown as 2025 Featured Artist
SEWE proudly announces Ray Brown as the 2025 Featured Artist for the upcoming wildlife celebration in Charleston, SC. Known for his powerful charcoal works, the Southern California-based artist will showcase his latest creations at SEWE, the Southeast’s premier wildlife art event, held from February 14-16, 2025. This three-day celebration of wildlife art, live entertainment, and outdoor experiences will span multiple venues across downtown Charleston.
Brown’s original piece Veiled has been selected as the 2025 Featured Piece. This striking depiction of a bull moose, an animal revered for its strength and grace, is inspired by Brown’s many hikes through the American West. Veiled captures the spirit of wildlife through Brown’s signature style, where simple yet evocative charcoal compositions bring a sense of reverence to the animals he portrays. Visitors can view Veiled at Gallery by SEWE, located in The Shops at Charleston Place, until it goes to auction at the SEWE VIP Gala & Sale on February 13.
“Being named the SEWE 2025 Featured Artist is truly an honor and a validation of the work I’ve done over the years. But more than that, it’s a full-circle moment for me. SEWE was the first show where I exhibited my work, more than twenty years ago. To be chosen as the 2025 Featured Artist takes me back to that first time I walked into the ballroom, and I feel proud of what I’ve accomplished in my career since then. I’m grateful that SEWE has continued to support me and provide a platform to showcase my work and passion for wildlife.” – Ray Brown
Brown’s choice of medium—charcoal—is intentional, reflecting his dedication to authenticity and simplicity. His art conveys depth through textures and careful compositions, allowing audiences to see the intricate connection between animals and their environments. For SEWE, Brown’s work embodies the event’s mission to celebrate the outdoors and inspire respect for wildlife.
SEWE’s President, John Powell, spoke to the significance of Brown’s selection: “We are deeply honored to have Ray Brown represent SEWE as our 2025 Featured Artist. His remarkable talent and longstanding friendship with SEWE—having first exhibited with us more than two decades ago—speak volumes about his commitment to our mission. Ray truly embodies the values SEWE promotes on a national level, and his artistry continues to enhance our visibility across the country. We’re grateful that he will once again share his passion for wildlife conservation and the great outdoors at our event.”
Ray Brown’s journey to becoming an acclaimed wildlife artist began in Baltimore, MD, where he earned a B.S. in Visual Communications and worked in commercial illustration and graphic design. However, his love for nature led him to pivot to fine art, which he pursued full-time after relocating to Southern California in 2003. His artwork, often inspired by experiences in the wilderness, has become a testament to the beauty and importance of wildlife preservation.
Join SEWE this February to experience Ray Brown’s compelling charcoal works, and witness the incredible celebration of art and wildlife that SEWE brings to Charleston every year.
