United States Coast Guard Search and Rescue Demonstration
Brittlebank Park Get Directions
Feb 19 @ 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm
SEWE is proud to showcase a small part of the vast responsibility of the United States Coast Guard. Visit the USCG booth at Brittlebank Park to learn more about the agency and the men and women who do so much to support our sea and the things we cherish. New this year, do not miss a special Search and Rescue demonstration in the waters off the Ashley River.
Since its inception, the U. S. Coast Guard has been a multi-mission agency. The eleven statutory missions seek to ensure the safety, security, and stewardship of the Nation’s waters. The men and women of the USCG protect mariners at sea, protect our nation from threats delivered by sea, and protect the sea itself.
To enforce fishing regulations, the U. S. Coast Guard partners with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and conducts at-sea operations to safeguard fisheries and marine protected resources. When a mariner is beyond three nautical miles from shore and recreationally fishing – as in, non-commercial fishing – they are generally in federal waters. State fishing regulations do not always apply, but federal fishing regulations do.
In our U. S. waters, federal fishing regulations are created by eight Regional Councils who develop management plans for marine fisheries in federal waters of their individual regions. Plans and specific management measures (such as fishing seasons, quotas, and closed areas) are developed based on sound scientific advice, and are initiated, evaluated, and ultimately are adopted in a fully transparent and public process. These plans and measures are implemented by the National Marine Fisheries Service of NOAA.
