About Karryl

"My pieces capture a moment in time in order to bring others to a closer awareness and appreciation of the natural world."

The animals that inhabit my work are creatures that have touched my heart. My deep desire to observe them in their natural habitats has me exploring our national parks and coast lands. Further afield, works have been inspired by trips to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Kenya. Living at the base of the Colorado Rockies affords me the thrill of observing the life cycles and seasonal changes of the land and its inhabitants.
My sculptures are bronze, created by using the lost wax process. I start by creating an armature using a flexible aluminum wire that allows me to twist and turn my subjects into their unique expressive poses. The characters are then built up using small pieces of soft clay. I work loosely. The direction and density of the application of the clay is related to the structure of the animal, the movement and the emotion being portrayed.
Karryl received her BFA from the University of Colorado. She continued her education at the Loveland Academy and an apprenticeship with master artist Hollis Williford. Her greatest teachers are the wild places around us.

Karryl is a signature member of the Society of Animal Artists And Artists for Conservation..
