SEWE counts it a great privilege to showcase an expansive collection of wildlife art from premier painters and sculptors in the genre. While the pinnacle of our year occurs in February when artists and collectors gather in Charleston, we represent artists and source new work year-round. We look forward to celebrating these new works with you throughout the year, and hope they bring you the same inspiration as they do us. Stay tuned as new works will be released bi-monthly. FRESH OFF THE EASEL WITH CHRIS MAYNARD
UNDERNEATH AND ABOVE
Naturally Shed Rattlesnake Skin, 12×18, $4,600
Chris Maynard, artist and avid bird conservationist, shares his unique art form of intricately carved feathers. To Chris, each feather is a small bit of perfection. to create his shadowboxed feathers, Maynard tediously works with three necessities – eye surgery scissors, forceps, and magnifying glasses. The feathers used are collected from aviaries after natural molting, with no harm to the bird. In fact, many of the owners of the feathers in the art are still alive and well.
“I work with feathers and the process is about flight and transformation. I was looking for balance and found that through the snakeskin. Life is a balance between getting to where we want to be and being where we are.”
– Chris Maynard

GROUND AND SKY STUDY
Chris Maynard has worked with feathers since he was twelve. His unique feather shadowboxes are recognized by art collectors, bird lovers, and a wide and interesting variety of people from around the world. He only has time to turn a small portion of his ideas, which fill many notebooks, into his shadow box feather designs. His favorite tools are the tiny eye surgery scissors, forceps, and magnifying glasses passed down through his family. Chris combines his strong backgrounds in biology and ecology into not only his art, but also a tabletop book and engaging and informative talks on the beauty, function, and meaning of feathers.
